Sarah Connolly and Elizabeth Watts at the RCM

Friday 3 October 2014

We are delighted to announce that RCM alumnae soprano Elizabeth Watts and mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly will be singing the two solo roles in our performance of Mahler’s Symphony no 2 on Thursday 23 October and Friday 24 October.

Described as 'an artist incapable of singing a broken or ugly phrase' by The Daily Telegraph, RCM alumna Sarah Connolly is one of the foremost British mezzo-sopranos. She recently visited the RCM for a vocal masterclass in the Britten Theatre with star RCM singers, which was broadcast live via our website to a world-wide audience.

With a voice described by International Record Review as 'one of the most beautiful Britain has produced in a generation' Elizabeth Watts has established herself as 'one of the brightest new talents' (The Independent). Winner of the 2006 Kathleen Ferrier Prize and the Rosenblatt Recital Song Prize at the 2007 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, we’re thrilled that she is joining us for these two performances.

Mahler's mighty and enormously popular Symphony no 2 forms the centrepiece of the Royal College of Music's autumn orchestral concert series. Also on the programme is a rare performance of the sensuous tone poem Aurora by William Lloyd Webber, father of Julian and Andrew, and a former student and professor at the RCM, whose centenary we are celebrating this year.
